The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit, but Waubonsee scored the game-winner in the final minutes to defeat the Chargers 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Region IV-leading Chiefs (4-1 overall, 3-0 Region IV) took a 2-0 lead into the break on goals by Renato Bonilla (15th minute) and Andy Emile (34th minute).

The Chargers (3-2-2, 1-2-2) cut their deficit in half in the 55th minute as Arlen Navarro (Miami, Fla./Sports Leadership & Management) took a pass from Mohamed Elshafie (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle), made a run down the right side and scored inside the far post from a sharp angle in the box.

Elshafie delivered the equalizer in the 61st minute off a restart. Standing about 45 yards out, Kyle Neacy (Bunbury, Australia/SEDA) sent a ball into the box that was headed by Erick Suarez (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville). It landed in front of Elshafie, who knocked it in with his left foot to even it at 2-2.

The teams traded chances after that before Waubonsee scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute. Making a run down the right side, Emile took a shot that Chargers keeper Felipe Petry (Barao, Brazil/Instituto Estadul de Educacao) saved with a dive to his right, but the rebound went straight to Waubonsee’s Librado Olivares, who tapped it in.

Sandburg finished with seven shots on goal to 15 for Waubonsee. Petry made four saves after coming off the bench midway through the second half for Iker Sanchez (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle).
